Why a Collective?

There is power in doing this journey together in Kotahitanga. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini - It is not on my own strength alone but in the strength of many.

We are seeking to weave together a diverse Collective of unlikely partners to navigate this complex problem. Working together, and in our own places of expertise, we can transform our systems so all can thrive.

Our commitment

Members of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective are committed to:

  • Acknowledging Te Tiriti o Waitangi as central to realising food security in Aotearoa

  • Acknowledging the impact of colonisation on our food and equity systems and participating in decolonisation and re-indigenisation as a form of healing and wellbeing

  • Celebrating the part we play in bringing the Kore Hiakai Theory of Change into action

  • Actively collaborating with others on Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective projects

  • Participating in Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective hui

  • Contributing resource towards our collective mahi, as you are able

  • Championing the mahi of Kore Hiakai within your own networks

  • Experiencing the ongoing formational Kore Hiakai journey

  • Acknowledging mana as a foundation value for all systems.

If you are keen to explore being a part of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective, check out Te Waharoa which explains the onboarding process and further aspects of the Collective.

Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective are people and organisations who are committed to:

  • Addressing the root causes of food-related poverty

  • Working together to create a food secure Aotearoa

We recognise that food insecurity is driven by systems, but experienced by people and Te Taiao.

Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective brings us together in Kotahitanga.

We build Te Tiriti grounded, long-term, sustainable solutions to ensure all people, at all times, have agency and access to enough nourishing, affordable, sustainably-sourced, culturally-appropriate food.

Te Waharoa: The way to belonging to the Collective

Te Waharoa outlines the process to becoming part of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective. This Waharoa allows those who wish to join the opportunity to discern what is good and right for our common goal – a food secure Aotearoa. Please look through Te Waharoa and when you are ready please email us at admin@korehiakai.org.nz to begin the process of whanaungatanga.

  • You can connect with someone who is part of Kore Hiakai at any level or we may reach out to you. The first step is a conversation. If you are keen to proceed, let us know and one of us will connect to enter the process of whakawhanaungatanga.

  • You will receive Te Waharoa o Kore Hiakai - this is our kete of resources for you to digest and consider, including; Statement of Commitment, Theory of Change, Mana to Mana Framework and other relevant information. We also welcome you to share any of your material with us as we, too, would like to soak in your wisdom.

  • While we are all considering each other’s exchange of knowledge, you will be encouraged to have a further conversation with someone who is already part of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective, one of our kaimahi, or Kai Rawa trustees. This is an opportunity for more whakawhanaungatanga.

  • During this time, we encourage you to participate in any of the Kore Hiakai activities, such as a Mana to Mana workshop, webinars, or other collaborative opportunities. This is the opportunity for you to decide if the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective is right for you. Existing members will also be discerning how you fit within the Collective. This is the moment that both Kore Hiakai and you consciously choose to be a part of the Collective.

  • Together, we will look at where we connect on this mahi, how you are already contributing to the wider kaupapa, what we can do together and how we can support each other in our journey towards a food secure Aotearoa.

  • Kore Hiakai is organised into a three Tikanga or three-house model for decision-making and some work streams. Those three houses are; Tangata Whenua, Tangata Tiriti, and Tagata Moana. The next step in moving through the Waharoa is for your organisation, or you as an individual, to consider which Tikanga you wish to be a part of for decision-making within the Collective.

  • When we are all ready, there will be a moment to acknowledge and welcome you to the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective.

  • “Being part of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective is invaluable for Te Tāpui Atawhai – Auckland City Mission. Our relationship with Kore Hiakai, as a national body for systems change in the food security space, is firmly rooted in a strong alignment of values and goals. The resources created through the work of Kore Hiakai are extremely useful to illustrate the challenges we are facing as a nation. Our collaboration significantly increases the chance of achieving the paradigm shift that both organisations wish to see.”

Our structure

The Kai Rawa Trust is the kaitiaki of both the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective and the Kore Hiakai backbone organisation. The backbone organisation is focused on strategic thinking, research, creating relationships and coordinating collaboration to address the root causes of food-related poverty and to work together to create a food secure Aotearoa. Our kaimahi champion this work alongside the growing Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective.

Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective is committed to having a balance of voices from across the diverse and complex food and equity spaces that will help us collectively create a food secure Aotearoa. We will actively seek voices which may be limited in their influence and participation, in order to bring that balance and equity to our wider conversations and actions.

We are committed to a three Tikanga approach to all our mahi. This applies to all levels of the Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger and Kai Rawa structure.

We welcome any organisation or individual committed to our kaupapa to enter into our Collective. We hope to include:

Whānau, Iwi, Hapū, kaupapa Māori organisations, community groups and those working in the social service sector, food producers; farmers, fishers, growers, hunters, divers, agribusiness, export, and trade, food manufacturers, retailers, and distributors, philanthropists, academics, policy makers, local and central government, and more.

E koekoe te tūī,

e ketekete te kākā,

e kūkū te kererū.

When we hear all the different voices of the birds, we know the wao is thriving.

By appreciating all our voices, our different songs, we make sure we can all thrive.

Nau mai, haere mai, join us on this important journey.

Together, we can make a change.
