June 2021 Pānui

Welcome to our June Pānui.

Heria te taura tangata

Weave the people.

As we move through the depths of winter and experience a return to COVID Alert Level 2 in part of our country, we are reminded how we are all in this together. Kore Hiakai continues to be inspired by the amazing things people are doing in their communities to both meet the needs of those who experience poverty-related hunger and to create longer-term food security. We invite you to explore that with us.

Aotearoa Standard Food Parcel Measure

The Aotearoa Standard Food Parcel Measure is: For 4 people (Adult or children), 3 meals a day for 4 days, at approximately 80% of the standard NZ nutritional intake.

We invite community food groups across Aotearoa to join in using this new measure. We are not asking you to change your current practice but rather measure your current practice using the Standard Aotearoa Food Parcel Measure. The measure does challenge the nutritional make up of many current food parcels. We are working with the New Zealand Food Network and the Aotearoa Food Rescue Alliance to give Foodbanks greater access to those foods that are often difficult to source for community groups. If you would like to come on board please contact Tammie: tammie.korehiakai@nzccss.org.nz

Kore Hiakai is hosting an event* to mark the launch of the new Aotearoa Standard Food Parcel Measure

Tuesday 29 June, 2.30-4pm, at Kaibosh Headquarters, 11 Hopper St, Mt Cook, Wellington. Please contact tammie.korehiakai@nzccss.org.nz if you would like to join us.

*subject to COVID Alert Levels

Matariki Online Academic Symposium on Food Security

Matariki is a time for people to gather to honour their tūpuna, celebrate the present, and plan ahead.

With this in mind, Kore Hiakai Zero Hunger Collective invite you to attend an online symposium to hear about past and current research on food insecurity in New Zealand, including Māori perspectives, and to discuss what this means for our efforts to achieve a food secure Aotearoa.

Comprising a mix of short keynote presentations and small group discussions, this symposium brings together academics, researchers and thought leaders from a range of disciplines, to ‘hear and share’ our collective (but dispersed) wisdom about drivers, responses and solutions to food insecurity.

Please register here by Monday 5 July.

‘Te Whāngai i ngā whetū’ is the third part of the Matariki ceremony, in which people give thanks by offering food. Food from different sources - forest, river, garden, ocean - are cooked together in the hāngī. When the hāngī is uncovered, the steam from the food rises up into the sky to feed Matariki. (Te wananga of Aoatearoa ‘Matariki ki runga!) In choosing this name for the symposium, we see the mixing of kai from many sources as a metaphor for the mixing of knowledge from many academic disciplines).

MSD Food Secure Communities Implementation Fund

The Food Secure Communities Implementation Fund is for communities to implement or scale up sustainable initiatives which will increase access to affordable and healthy kai within low-income communities and / or enable Māori to exercise tino rangatiratanga over food systems that feed and nourish whānau. In doing so, this helps reduce the dependency on foodbanks and food hardship grants.

There is up to $2 million available for initiatives that cover the period from September 2021 to 30 June 2022.

Applications open on 24 May 2021 and close on 25 July 2021 at 11.59pm. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by mid-September 2021.

Find out more about the Food Secure Communities Implementation Fund, including funding criteria and an application form.

Matariki is a time for pausing, reflecting and taking stock of things. It is a time for celebrating whānau & community, present and gone before us. As we pause for Matariki Kore Hiakai are deeply grateful for the broad community connections to this incredible mahi of dreaming and creating a food secure Aotearoa. We are grateful for those trying new things, those challenging unjust systems, those in the systems inviting partnerships with flax roots, and for those with power offering to share it and explore how to bring well-being for all in Aotearoa. There may still be a way to go but we are grateful that we are going this TOGETHER.

As Matariki is ascending and Wellington returning to Alert Level 2 we encourage everyone to refresh themselves about the COVID alert level requirements. You will find the comprehensive guidelines for community food organisations here Community Food COVID-19 alert level guidelines.

May Matariki keep us be mindful of each other and uplift each other in the mahi that we do.
